About Michael Moncur

Like any personal site, Sequenced Notes will take most of its personality from its author. Just to give you a rough idea of where I’m coming from, here are a few things I believe about electronic music:

  • It’s my favorite kind of music, although I do listen to rock, pop, classical, and jazz on occasion.
  • Just about every sub-genre of electronic music has value. I’d rather listen to good music than try to file it into the appropriate box.
  • Electronic music can be just as emotional and powerful as accoustic music.
  • Digital electronic instruments can be just as emotional and powerful as analog electronic instruments.
  • Making great music takes more than great gear—it takes talent, hard work, emotion, and time, whether you’re working with a second-hand piano or a roomful of expensive synthesizers.
  • Resonant filters still sound really cool, and I don’t care if they’re a cliche.

As a musician, I primarily work with keyboards, although my typical style involves more time spent at the computer keyboard than the synthesizer. The only instrument I truly consider myself a master of is the computer; with everything else (syntheziser, bass guitar, drums, harmonica) I’m just an enthusiastic amateur.

While I’m far from a professional musician, I am a professional writer and webmaster. Running web sites is my full time job, although this one exists more for fun than to make money. You can read more about my web sites and the books I’ve written if you’re interested.

Personally, I live with my wife in Salt Lake City, Utah, certainly not a place known for its thriving electronic music community. Other hobbies include model rocketry, houseplants, origami, and aquaria. That’s right—music is my least geeky pastime.

I’ll post MP3s of some of the music I’ve produced here soon.
